The Sixth International Symposium on Runes and Runic Inscriptions
11-16 August 2005, University of Lancaster

Languages and Scripts in Contact

Call for Papers

UPDATE: The deadline for abstract submissions has been extended to 30 August 2004.

The conference theme of ‘Languages and Scripts in Contact’ has been chosen as particularly appropriate for the conference location in the north-west of England, a meeting-point for Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian and Celtic speakers and writers in the Middle Ages. Local inscriptions such as the Bridekirk font, with its Middle English inscription in both Norse runes and English bookhand characters, demonstrate this mingling of writing traditions.

The organisers invite proposals for papers on:

  • the main theme of the conference
  • inscriptions in the northwest of England and neighbouring areas
  • any aspect of runological study

Abstracts of around 300 words should be sent to the Conference Secretary by 1 November 2004. All proposals will be peer-reviewed and delegates will be informed by the end of November. Any submissions received after this date will be considered if there is room in the programme. It is anticipated that most papers will be 20 or 30 minutes in length.
